Hot New Cocktails from the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival

A drink is just a drink, right? Well, until it's being sipped by an A-list celebrity. Remember what the Jimmy Choo-strapped ladies of Sex and The City did for the Cosmopolitan? As soon as Carrie and Samantha knocked back a couple Cosmos on the trend-setting HBO series, every woman in every bar across the continent was ordering one.

And look at Cristal. It was just another overpriced champagne until mega-stars like Jay-Z and P. Diddy started dropping the name into song lyrics. Soon every average Bay Street showoff with an expense account was ordering $350 bottles of "Stal" just to roll with the big boys.

So what's the hot drink this fall? If alcohol sponsors at this year's Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) have their way, you'll be clamouring for cocktails swimming in SKYY Vodka or Jameson Irish Whiskey.

This year's official TIFF cocktails are the Amarula Colada and the SKYY Red Carpet Fizz (recipes below) according to Toronto Star celebrity disher Rita Zekas. Along with a panel of cocktail taste-testers, Zekas chose these two elixirs from a selection of cocktails created by Nishan Neplugonda, bartender extraodinaire at Toronto's Blowfish Restaurant and Sake Bar, to come up with this year's winners.

We call these the "official" cocktails because of the amount of free cases of booze each company donates to TIFF parties in return for prime logo positions on red carpets. For the chance to be captured on film with the letters "SK" going into the left side of Cate Blanchett's head while "YY" spills out from under the dimpled chin of Clive Owen, these are priceless corporate plugs.

Amarula Colada
1 oz. Amarula
2 oz. fresh coconut water *

Shake Amarula and coconut water together in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Strain into a martini glass rimmed with sugared coconut.
